ABSTRACT

This study examines the Factors Associated with the Failure Rate of Students in English Language in Senior Secondary School using Egor Local Government Area, Edo State, as a case study. The main aim of the study is to identify some of the problems and make appropriate recommendation which will help schools in Egor local government area in Edo state, find solutions to the problems encountered by the students’ failure in learning and, performing well in English language. Five research questions were raised to guide the study. The population of the study consists of ten (10) public senior secondary schools in Egor local government with a population of six thousand, six hundred and ninety two (6,692). The sample size for the study consisted of four (4) senior secondary schools with a population of hundred (100) students.

It adopted descriptive survey research design. To ensure the validity of the Instrument, the research instrument was examined and judged by the project supervisor and other experts in the department of Adult and Non Formal Education, University of Benin. Their suggestions and comments were adequately incorporated in the production of the final instrument. The test re-test reliability study was adopted to establish the reliability of the instrument. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from a total number of 100 students in the area studied. Simple percentage and frequency count were used to analyze the collected data.

 

This study revealed the causes of students’ poor performance to include; teachers’ qualification, mother tongue interference, lack of instructional materials, teaching method and unconducive learning environment. Based on the findings, the study recommended that schools should employ a well-trained and qualified English teachers that can teach and prepare the students for any examination. It was also recommended that the school environment should be far away from market places and noisy areas to avoid distractions. Other recommendations were made in line with the findings of this study.
