ABSTRACT
This study investigates the multifaceted factors contributing to student withdrawal rates at the University of Benin, Nigeria, with a comprehensive examination of Situational Factors, Institutional Factors, Dispositional Factors, and Academic Factors. The research analyzes a dataset of 399 student responses to questionnaires, utilizing a multiple regression analysis to discern the significance and magnitude of the influence of these factors on student withdrawal rates. The findings reveal compelling insights into the determinants of student withdrawal at the University of Benin. While the analysis highlights a strong positive relationship between Institutional Factors and student withdrawal rates, indicating that institutional policies, support services, and campus climate play pivotal roles, it also underscores the significance of Academic Factors. The positive relationship between Academic Factors and withdrawal rates suggests that academic quality, curriculum relevance, and support services have notable impacts on student persistence. Conversely, Situational Factors and Dispositional Factors do not exhibit significant effects on student withdrawal rates in this context. These results provide valuable guidance to university administrators, policymakers, and educators in their efforts to enhance student retention and success. Recommendations include strengthening institutional support services, improving academic quality and relevance, enhancing mental health and well-being support, and implementing data-driven decision-making strategies. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on student retention and withdrawal in higher education and offers a focused analysis of the challenges faced by students at the University of Benin. It underscores the importance of tailoring retention strategies to the unique needs of the institution and its student population. The implications of this research extend beyond the University of Benin and can inform retention efforts at universities and colleges globally, serving as a valuable resource for academic leaders committed to fostering student success.
