ABSTRACT
The study examined the factors that affect the teaching of fine art in junior secondary schools in Oredo local government of Edo state Benin City. To guide the study, five research questions were raised. The survey research design was used for this research work. Five research questions were raised to guide the study. Questionnaire was designed and used for data collection. A total of one hundred (100) respondents were used in the study. The simple percentage was used for analyzing data obtained from the study.
From the findings of the study, it was discovered that there is lot of factor affecting teaching of fine art in junior secondary school, the factor includes: inadequate space for fine art, and lack of support from the government and community. It was not so impressive that some school lack art material and studios equipment’s. The study revealed that there a lot of problems that limit the teaching and practice sculpture and ceramics in junior secondary schools, which was majorly the inadequate provision for the materials needed in the schools; and teachers' does not enough time to teach the student effectively. The study also discovered that some parent does not support their children to learn and practice.
Therefore, it was recommended that government and schools should host adequate orientation, training or workshops for teachers to provide them with the adequate knowledge and skills needed to teach the student effectively and efficiently; there should also be adequate funding by the authorities concerned for the provision of art materials and studio facilities. It was also recommended that government should work on the junior secondary school curriculum in other to favor the teacher so they can have enough time to practice and teach the student; students should also be enlighteneds on how to use the studio equipment.
