ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study was to Evaluate the Factors Affecting the Performance of Junior Secondary Students in English Language in Ovia North East Local Government of Edo State. The research design employed was the descriptive research design. The population of the study consisted of all (174) senior secondary schools students in Ovia North East with a population of 5,767 students. The convenience sampling technique was employed in selecting the sample size of 400. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire which was validated and certified before administration. The data gathered was analysed using the descriptive statistics. The result of the study showed that teacher quality has an effect on the academic performance of students in secondary school. The attitude of students affects the academic performance in English Language. The lack of English teaching and learning materials, lack of training for English teachers and infrequent use of English language in the school and home causes poor performance of students in English language. Using different teaching materials, employing more qualified teachers, allotting more time to teaching and providing a comfortable class will improve the performance of students in English language. The study recommends therefore that teachers who are more qualified to teach English language should be employed and attracted by the secondary school management to help improve students' performance. The attitude of students need to be changed through regular awareness by the school and parents decided at parents teachers association (PTA) meetings to make students develop more interests in learning and speaking correct English.
