ABSTRACT
The study examined the Factors affecting the performance of chemistry students in senior secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo State. The method of data collection was drawn through the aid of questionnaire. A Sample size of hundred (100) questionnaire was drawn purposively from the population. Survey research design and simple percentage method of analysis was used for the data analysis.
Based on the findings, the study therefore gave the following conclusion that the influence of teaching and learning on the performance of chemistry students, it was revealed that the teaching and methods of chemistry increases the performance of students, that instructional materials help in bringing out good performance of students in learning of chemistry in secondary schools. On influence of students; attitude towards chemistry, it was revealed that, the attitude of students influences their performance on chemistry, peer group influence students’ attitude towards chemistry. Also, carrier interest also influences students’ attitude towards chemistry.
The following recommendation were made that the school management should make it compulsory for students to see the important of the use of instructional materials in achieving proper academic performance. And also, as use of instructional materials helps teachers to properly explain chemistry principles in a manner that is most effective. Since students learn chemistry better with instructional materials, teachers should be mandated to make use of the instructional materials prepared in order to teach the students effectively and at the same time pass the intended message across.
