ABSTRACT

Sustainable construction is gaining popularity in the worldwide construction sector as a possible strategy to improve building performance through the implementation of sustainable construction principles. The purpose of this research is to determine the factors that influence the adoption of sustainable construction practices in the Edo State construction industry. A study employed a questionnaire survey of 560 construction experts from across Edo State. The study the discovered that “Prefabricated material in controlled environment”, “Active solar power” and “Using locally sourced materials” was the top three used sustainable construction practice in Edo State. Furthermore, the top three factors affecting the adoption of sustainability construction in Edo State were identified as "Client demand" “Lack of financial incentives" and "Technical difficulty during construction process" The study discovered that there was a significant difference in the adoption of sustainable construction in public and private sector projects. In addition, the three most important strategies for compelling the adoption of sustainable construction in Edo State's construction industry were identified as "financial and further market-based incentives for sustainable construction practices adopters," "availability of better information on the cost and benefits of sustainable construction practices," and "mandatory government policies and regulation" The study's findings will aid practitioners and policymakers in devising realistic ways for driving the adoption of sustainable construction in Edo State in order to achieve building sustainability. The interrelationships between the appealing techniques and how they affect the uptake of sustainable construction will be investigated in future studies.
