ABSTRACT

The importance of history education in secondary schools is vital, as it aids students in comprehending the past and shaping the future. Nevertheless, certain students struggle in history and underperform in exams. Factors contributing to poor history performance include lack of interest, inadequate teaching resources, ineffective teaching methods, and societal attitudes towards the subject. These issues can hinder academic success and limit career prospects.

A strong grasp of history is essential across disciplines like law, journalism, and politics. In law, historical knowledge is key to understanding legal systems and documents. Similarly, journalism relies on history to provide context for accurate reporting, and politics requires historical understanding for informed decision-making. Poor performance in history can lead to an achievement gap and perpetuate social inequality.

Socioeconomic status, language barriers, cultural differences, and inadequate representation can hinder history education, particularly for marginalized groups. Teachers' perceptions and biases also impact student performance. This research focuses on Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria, to analyze how historical knowledge influences academic and professional prospects and societal inequality. It also investigates the impact of poor history performance on personal and social lives.

The research aims to answer key questions about students' interest in history, effective teaching methods, societal attitudes, academic and professional outcomes, recommendations for improvement, and the influence of social and cultural factors. By addressing these issues, the study seeks to enhance history education quality, promote equitable opportunities, and foster critical thinking, analytical skills, and historical consciousness. The research encompasses the specific context of Oredo Local Government Area while acknowledging limitations in sample size, language, and geographic scope. Descriptive statistics was used to provide insights into the distribution and characteristics of the factors affecting students' performance in history.
