ABSTRACT

The study examined the factors affecting students’ academic performance in chemistry in senior secondary school. The instrument used for data collection was a well-structured questionnaire, which was developed and administered to 50 students from senior secondary schools in Egor local Government Area of Edo state. The data from their responses were analyzed with the use of simple percentage. The data revealed that factors affecting the academic performance of chemistry students, are these factors chemistry teachers related, are these factors chemistry students related, are these factors related to school environment, are these factors related to school locationin Egor local Government Area of Edo state. It is therefore recommended that the curriculum for chemistry in senior secondary schools should be periodically reviewed and updated to align with current educational standards and global trends in chemistry education, continuous training and professional development programs for chemistry teachers should be encouraged. This should include workshops, seminars, and access to online resources to keep teachers updated with the latest teaching methodologies and content knowledge, efforts should be made to reduce class sizes in chemistry classrooms. Smaller class sizes allow teachers to provide more individualized attention to students, which can positively impact their understanding and performance in the subject, schools should invest in technology to support chemistry education. Interactive software, simulations, and digital resources can make complex concepts more accessible and engaging for students.
