ABSTRACT

This study examined factors affecting students’ academic performance in Basic Science in Junior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo state. The instrument use for data collection was questionnaire, which was developed and administered to 100 JSS3 students from junior secondary school in Egor local government area of Edo state. The data from their responses were analyzed with the use of simple percentage. The results revealed that effective teaching in Basic science significantly impacts students’ academic performance, it also revealed that a conducive and well-equipped learning environment enhances academic outcomes in Basic science. Furthermore, the study revealed that to a great extent the availability of textbooks, internet and other learning materials greatly affects students’ academic performance and lastly, it was revealed that a good study habit plays a vital role in students’ academic achievement in Basic science. It is therefore recommended that there should be organization of regular training programs for Basic science teachers to enhance their teaching methods and boost their knowledge, school administrations should prioritize the provision and maintenance of well-equipped science laboratories and conducive classrooms for Basic science, finally government and educational boards should ensure easy access to quality textbooks, online resources and supplementary materials for students.
