ABSTRACT

The subject matter of this research work is to measure factors affecting adult learners’ participation in literacy programmes in Ovia – North East Local Government Area, Edo state.

The total population of this study was three hundred and thirty persons (330), using a simple random sampling technique, the numbers of respondents became one hundred and ten (110). Four research questions were formulated to guide the study, from which the questionnaire was designed.

From the analyzed data, it showed that the study reveals that adults in this region are participating in literacy programmes with the goal of upgrading themselves. They recognize the importance of improving their literacy skills for various reasons. The adults in Ovia – North East LGA join literacy programmess for different reasons. Some want to gain meaningful employment or advance in their current jobs. Others engage in these programmes to improve their communication skills with friends and family members. Some adults also participate to contribute to their children's education. Ovia – North East LGA offers various adult literacy programmes to cater to different educational needs. These programmes include vocational and entrepreneurship classes, basic and functional literacy courses, health education, numeracy, and financial education.
