ABSTRACT
The number of students seeking and getting admission into universities increases every year, and this has led to the failure of the original design of university hostels. Furthermore, student hostels in Nigeria have not received the desired attention from the government and management of institutions. Thus, these have led to the study of the university of Benin On-campus hostels with the aim of assessing the adequacy of their facilities, as well as the condition of the facilities in the hostel, and also the satisfaction level of student with the hostel facilities, in order to generate guidelines to improve the design and quality of hostels. To achieve this, primary and secondary research data were collected. The stratified random sampling was used to select the hostels and the systematic random sampling was used to select the respondents, the target population was 1055 rooms in the selected hostels and a sample size of 293 was selected. The secondary data were reviews of relevant literature from journals, books and other academic materials. Data obtained were analyzed through the use of Mean Item Score to access the adequacy of the hostel facilities, Relative Importance Index was used to examine the condition of the hostel facilities, and also the use of Relative Satisfaction Index to determine the satisfaction level of students with the hostel facilities. Among the findings of the research most of the facilities are in good condition which includes electricity supply, water supply, common area, study area, bed space, However other facilities such as Bathroom, toilet, drainage, waste disposal were found to be in poor condition and in term of adequacy shopping facilities, common areas, electricity were found to be adequate and other facilities such as toilet facilities, bathroom facilities, room size, hygiene management were found to be inadequate and the level of satisfaction of student with some of the hostel facilities was moderate. Among the recommended guidelines adequate facilities should be provided, hostel facilities should be well maintained and regularly inspected, university management should address the issue of squatters in the student hostels in order to reduce the increasing pressure of the facilities.
