ABSTRACT

Essential lime oil (Citrus aurantifolia) peel has high activity in inhibiting the growth of bacterials. In this study lime oil was extracted from its peel by hydro-distillation with a temperature of 95-100oc for about 3-4hours. The essential oil extracted, was about 10-15ml. physio-chemical characterization was done on the lime essential oil the properties and values obtained are as follows: Acid value=8.384 m g KOH/g ,saponification value=151.47 mgKOH/g, peroxide value=160.1meg/kg, iodine value= 59.7gI2/100g .

The lime essential oil was use along with other constituent like coconut oil as carrier oil, peppermint oil, xylitol, baking soda etc for the production of mouthwash. The ph of the mouthwash produced was 10.8.
