ABSTRACT

The poor disposal of waste causes real problems to humans and the environment in general. The effluent from waste causes one illness or the other that is why methods of remediation are being researched. In this study, the use of limonene from orange peels as a possible mosquito repellent was investigated. The orange peels were locally sourced and the oil was extracted through the process of steam distillation. The procedure was repeated for one day old peels and it was compared to that of fresh peels. The oil was characterized determining the brix value, refractive index and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the FTIR of the oil falls under the range of 3200-3500 as such the oil is an alcohol, hence its volatility. It also has a refractive index of 1.39 and a brix vale of 38.5%. All of these properties were tested to be close in value to limonene.
