ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine the bioactive chemical constituents of methanol extract of Oecophylla longinoda (African Weaver Ant). The ants were collected from their nest, immersed in water to immobilize them, filtered and then crushed. Methanol solvent was used for extraction in a soxhlet apparatus. The ant crude methanol was made polar by adding methanol and distilled water to it. The polar fraction was fractionated using hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and methanol-water extract. The four fractions were concentrated respectively using a rotary evaporator. Bioactive screening was conducted on the methanol extract using standard method and procedures. The screening indicated that the extract contains glycoside, saponin, phenolics, terpenes, eugenols, alkaloids and flavonoids. This suggests that polar solvents extracts more of the chemical constituents and thus water extract of Weaver ant will be a good candidate for pharmacological and other medicinal formulations due to the presence of phytochemical constituents.
