ABSTRACT
The plant Hibiscus sabdariffa popular known as Roselle or “Zobo”as it is called in Nigeria is a very common medicinal plant with lots of health benefits and various applications such as flavoring agent in wine, juice, jam, jelly, syrup, brewed as tea, and the major ingredient in the popular Nigerian zobo drink. This work focuses on the extraction, phytochemical screening and functional group analysis of methanol extract of Hibiscus Sabdariffa (Zobo). Cold extraction was carried out through maceration using methanol as the extraction solvent. Phytochemical screening was done according to standard methods while isolation was done by vacuum liquid chromatography and characterization by Infrared Spectroscopy. Percentage yield of the extract was 17.74%. Phytochemical screening of the extract indicated the presence of glycosides, alkaloids, eugenols, tanins, flavonoids, Saponins, terpenoids and reducing sugars. Functional group detected indicated the presence of alcohol(O-H), alkene(C=C) and Alkyl(C-H) functional groups among others. This work suggest that the methanol extract of H.sabdariffa had useful phytochemicals containing compounds with alochols, esters, organic acid bonds.
