ABSTRACT
This work aimed to extract perfume from the peels of Ananas comosus and its potential application in perfumery. By-products such as fruit wastes (bagasse, peel, and seeds) can also be potential ingredients in food formulations or raw material for the extraction of bioactive compounds (phenolics, carotenoids, essential oils, and vitamins), minerals, and antimicrobial agents. The solvent extraction method was used in extracting the oil. About 150g of dried pineapple peels were extracted using n-hexane as the solvent to obtain essential oils required for the formulation of perfumes. The result of the solvent extraction process showed that 0.84 g of essential oil per 130g of dry pineapple peels produce 0.65% oil. The perfume obtained from the essential oil was compare to the conventional perfume which was formulated from the essential oil obtained from the market. In conclusion, the perfume formulated from the pineapple peels was observed to have higher than that of the conventional perfume.
