ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to investigate the Extent of Implementation of Safety Practices in Biology Laboratories among Senior Secondary School Students in Oredo local government area of Edo State
A descriptive survey research design was employed in this study. Five(5) research questions were raised to guide the study. The target population of the study comprises all the twelve (12) public senior secondary schools in Oredolocal government area in Edo state , and sample size of one hundred (100) biology students were drawn from a sample size of four (4)secondary schools in Oredo local government area, using simple random sampling techniques.A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology; while the test- re test reliability method was adopted to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.
The study reveals that most senior secondary schools in Oredo practice safety in biology labs, but with varying levels of equipment provision and accessibility. Students are aware of safety protocols, yet challenges like funding and cultural factors persist. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made for the study: include sustaining safety practices, standardizing equipment accessibility, enhancing student awareness, addressing funding and training issues, and mitigating potential consequences of inadequate safety measures through stringent protocols and safety awareness campaigns.
