ABSTRACT

Benin has a long history of pottery making. Pottery wares in Benin are often designed with traditional patterns and motifs, and are often finished in terracotta red, dark brown and black. Some pots however have also been traditionally painted in kaolin for religious purposes, and more recently in enamel silver paint, which is an indication that painting traditional pottery is an emerging area of decorating pottery in Benin. This study is therefore aimed at reinventing traditional pottery in Benin by using relevant colours and symbols to make them more attractive to people other than the buyers and users of the traditional pottery alone.

Using an exploratory research method, this study explored painting relevant traditional motifs, symbols and themes on a selected number of produced Benin pottery. It specifically explored the use of acrylic paint and culture sensitive colour schemes in highlighting relevant cultural themes, symbols and motifs as alternative finishes on produced Benin pottery.
