ABSTRACT
The COVID-19 pandemic forced a dramatic shift in theatre, with live performances giving way to digital platforms. This research explores the impact of this transition on Theatre for Development (TfD), a practice that uses theatrical techniques to address social issues and empower communities. The study examines how TfD practitioners adapted their work to the digital realm during COVID-19. It analyzes the potential benefits and drawbacks of digital TfD, considering factors like accessibility, audience engagement, and the ability to foster community dialogue. By drawing on the experiences of TfD practitioners during the pandemic, the research aims to illuminate the possibilities and challenges of digital theatre in promoting development goals. The project's goal is to look into how digital theatre will assist Theatre for Development during times of global crisis, with a particular emphasis on Nigeria's COVID-19 experience. Using YouTube, this study will examine how, even in difficult circumstances like a pandemic, digital theatre may be used in the theatre industry to further societal development and transformation. Through an examination of the merging of digital theatre and theatre for development, this study aims to clarify the possible advantages, difficulties, and consequences of applying this innovative approach in a real-world emergency situation. Drama is used as a vehicle for social change and community development in theatre for development, a creative expression. It has been successfully used in a variety of settings to address social challenges, enhance intercultural understanding, and encourage communication between different individuals. However, lockdowns and social distancing measures brought about by the COVID-19 epidemic resulted in the cancellation or postponing of multiple live performances hence, the importance of digital theatre.
