ABSTRACT

This project explored contemporary dance as a means for addressing the ideology and misconception that most people have about the practice of exorcism , using 'THE POSSESSED GIRL' a dance that shows the importance of exorcism and the fact that Jesus Christ himself commanded us to exorcise (cast out demons in His name mark 16:16 - 18).. The work researched into the origin and meaning of exorcism, issues of demonic possession and the different beliefs that practices it to show that it is a religious act and not something fetish and a command from God. The methodologies used in sourcing for information were; Artistic /Experimental research method, which involved creating a dance script, auditioning, rehearsing with the dancers and staging a dance production. The second method of research included, library research, consultation of books, journals, articles, etc. Which relates to the topic of study. The research concludes that dance should not just be for mere entertainment but rather it should be didactic; pass information, create awareness on pressing and challenging issues and maybe proffer a temporary solution to help at that given time. Therefore, dance should not just be for entertainment but also for enlightenment.
