ABSTRACT

This study explored the use of synaesthetic metaphor in Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy and Homer’s The Odyssey. It analysed how these synaesthetic metaphors are used within the epics and attempted to classify these synaesthetic metaphors based on their use by the poets and how their individual cultures influenced their choice of synaesthetic forms to be used and the influence on the themes and overall interpretation of the epics.

The study adopted a qualitative approach, as well as Gaston Bachelard’s Poetics of Space with relation to Wolfgang Iser’s Reader Response Theory as the theoretical framework for the study. The study makes use of examples of synaesthetic metaphors within the epics for analysis.

The study found that synaesthetic metaphors as a poetic form, helps the poet to draw more vivid images within the mind of the reader through the use of sensory overlap, thereby causing one sense to be interpreted with another, resulting in an immersive experience in the epics.
