ABSTRACT

This study investigated the availability, accessibility, and quality of play facilities in early childhood centres in Benin City. The survey design was used to collect data from 50 teachers in 10 preschools. The results show that most centres have outdoor playgrounds, swings, slides, balls, building blocks, drama/music costumes, and flashcards. However, merry-go-rounds and climbing structures are less common. Play facilities are generally accessible to teachers and pupils, but monitoring pupils during play is inconsistent. While most facilities are considered safe and well-maintained, there is room for improvements in maintenance and inspection practices. The study highlights the importance of providing a range of play facilities to support children’s holistic development and recommends improvement in accessibility, utilization, and quality of play facilities in early childhood centres in Benin City.
