ABSTRACT

The study investigated deviance behaviour and its effects on the teaching learning process of literature students in senior secondary school Ovia-North east LGA. The design adopted for this study was the descriptive survey research method. Five research questions were raised to guide this study: does deviant behaviour appear common among students in secondary schools in recent times? what is the level of deviant behaviour among students in secondary schools? what are the forms of deviant behaviour that are prevalent /commonly seen in secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area? in what ways have deviant behaviour affected the teaching-learning processes in recent times among secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area? What are the possible solutions to remedy the scourge of deviant behaviour? The population of the study consists of all the government secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State. There are 16 secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government with a total population of 20,752 secondary school students. A total of one hundred and fifty (150) students selected from 16 secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area made up the sample for this study The data retrieved from respondents after sampling was analyzed by the use of a Computer Statistical Tool (SPSS), and the results were displayed on tables using frequency and percentage to represent the data. The finding of the study revealed that deviant behaviour appears common among senior Secondary School Students in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State. The findings confirmed that the level of deviant behaviour among senior Secondary School Students in Ovia North-East local government area is very high. The findings of the study also revealed that sexual offenses, rival gangs, alcoholism and noise making are prevalent among senior Secondary School Students in Ovia North-East local government. The Finding of the study also revealed that deviant behaviour has negative effects on teaching-learning processes in recent times among secondary schools in Ovia North-Easts local government area.
