ABSTRACT
Drilling fluid is an important component of any drilling operation: it represents about 15%-20% of the total well drilling cost. This work investigates the possibility of using plantain peelings powder as a rheology control additive in comparison to the standard rheology additive, which in this case, is organophilic clay. The results show that at the same concentration, the plastic and apparent viscosity of the usual additives is lower than that of the local additives. In contrast, the yield point of the industry additive is much higher than the local additives. At a higher concentration of the plantain peelings, the plastic and apparent viscosities increased by 25% and 23.5%, respectively, but the yield point remained the same.
The analysis shows that the use of plantain peelings as rheology control additives is not favorable compared to that of the standard additives because it has to be in a higher concentration. This will result in more solid contents in the hole and lead to stuck pipes (a drilling problem that should be avoided).
