ABSTRACT

This research aimed to examine exercise as a tool for promoting healthy aging and preventing age related diseases in older adults. The study focused on addressing five research questions. A simple random sampling technique was employed to select the sample of seventy older adults in the University of Benin, Benin City. Data was collected through questionnaire instruments and analyzed using a simple percentage method. It was revealed in this research that exercise is a highly effective tool for promoting healthy aging and preventing age related diseases in older adults in the University of Benin, Benin City. From the findings made, exercise promotes overall health, helps older adults to maintain independence and functionality, exercise positively impacts mental health and cognitive functioning, exercise enhances social connection and overall sense of wellbeing. Further findings of the study revealed that exercise can prevent obesity related diseases, improve mobility and flexibility, motivation impacts older adult’s participation in regular exercise; and that motivation is not solely internal or external but both, therefore measures should be put in place to ensure that older adults are motivated to engage in regular exercise activities. This study therefore concluded that available and accessible exercise facilities has bearing to older adults participation in regular exercise, that if there were more exercise facilities that are accessible, older adults will be more likely to engage in exercise activities and there should be specialized exercise programs or facilities for older adults with physical disabilities to engage in regular exercise.
