ABSTRACT
Regular exercise is essential for the overall health and well-being of university students. This study aimed to examine Exercise as a major component of health among University of Benin undergraduate students. A descriptive survey research design was employed and a simple random sampling technique was used to select 120 students from the population. Questionnaire instruments were used to collect data, which was analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and percentages.
The finding revealed that most students have a positive attitude and perception toward exercise, admitting its benefits for physical and mental health. Nevertheless, it was revealed that the absence of standard sports and exercise facilities and equipment is a major constraint to participation in sports and exercise activities. Moreover, parental and peer influences were found to have a significant impact on promoting and inhibiting exercise habits among students.
The study also highlights the importance of regular exercise participation for student’s health and well-being additionally it stresses the need for the university to provide adequate sports and exercise facilities and equipment to support students’ exercise habits. Furthermore, it brought to light the problems of inactivity among students at the University of Benin with the majority admitting that the stress of academics influences their level of exercise participation.
