ABSTRACT
This Research work aims to investigate the benefits of outdoor play and assess its influence on the cognitive and physical aspect of child's development in primary schools in Oredo Local government area Benin City. Five (5) research questions were formulated for the study. Firstly, we aim to examine the relationship between outdoor play and physical fitness. We will also investigate the impact of outdoor play on cognitive skills. This includes exploring how outdoor play influences problemsolving abilities, creativity, and critical thinking. By observing children engaging in various outdoor activities, we can gain insights into the cognitive benefits of outdoor play. The research method adopted was the descriptive survey method. The target population of this study comprises of all private schools. A sample size of one hundred (100) respondents were used. The instrument used was four points likert scale of Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree and Strongly disagree. The reliability of the instrument was achieved using Cronbach alpha which yielded 0.84. The data collected was analyzed using simple percentage. The findings of this research shows that the utilization of outdoor play is a very imperative factor that will help the children in many ways including helping to build their fine and gross motor skills, improve their social abilities and also help the children relate play activities to real life events. The findings of this research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on early childhood development. Moreover, Recommendations were made for educators, parents, and policymakers bearing in mind the importance of outdoor play, to enhance the physical, cognitive, and social-emotional well-being of young children.
