ABSTRACT
The greatest advancements in technical and technological growth are currently being dealt with by modern civilization, which is also dealing with the rapid development of information technology and the automation of work activities across all spheres of social life. The deliberate misuse of this technological advancement has produced a number of issues and risks for individuals and groups in society at large, as well as for national security in particular, and has changed how criminals (offenders) commit crimes. This study was prompted by the need to determine the efficacy of Nigeria's current cybercrime regulatory framework, as well as the variety of approaches taken by other jurisdictions, as well as the related problem of cybercrime from the standpoint of governments and international organizations, and how to combat cyber-related crimes. The research approach used in this study was a thorough inquiry into the legal framework of cybercrime using a qualitative research methodology. This study made use of primary and secondary sources of law such as legislations, cases etc. The findings of the study show that current cybercrime legislative measures are insufficient to combat cybercrime; however, those that are available could address the cybercrime threat. As a result, it is recommended that legislation keep up with e-crime, with some revision needed to address common and sophisticated cyber threats. Security measures (technical and non-technical) will need to be put in place and enforced as part of the solutions, in addition to awareness and culture. This might include toughening up on punishments and making offenses more significant. It was also recommended that financial institutions build fraud detection divisions in order to combat the scourge of cybercrime in the country.
