ABSTRACT

The prevalence of corruption in any modern government is not peculiar to any part of the world, continent, region or ethnic group. However, some countries have been proven to be more corrupt and others have better plans in managing and combating corruption. Corruption thrives when economic policies are poorly designed, education levels or standards are low, civil society participation is weak, the public sector management is poor and accountability of public institutions are weak. The objective of this project is to examine the legal and constitutional frameworks in combating corruption in Nigeria. This long essay examines corruption, its history, the meaning, as well as, causes and effects of corruption on the Nigerian economy. Over the years anti-corruption agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), have been mandated by the Federal Government to combat corruption. However, corruption still thrives in Nigeria. This work makes an analysis of anti-corruption laws in other jurisdictions. This long essay finds that corruption still thrives in Nigeria due to the challenges that the attempts to combat this menace has encountered and the lack of independence and incessant interference of the government of the day in the activities of anticorruption agencies. This project would also identify the prospects of combating corruption in Nigeria, and offer certain viable and transformational measures, methods and solutions that can enable an effective combating and eventual reduction of corruption in Nigeria. The mode of research adopted is the doctrinal method, thus primary sources such as statutory and judicial authorities, with secondary sources encompassing journals, articles, and internet references has been used to achieve the aim and objectives of this long essay. This work concludes that the fight against corruption can be won in due time if the prospects identified and the solutions proffered are duly applied.
