EXAMINATION OF THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF POOR READING HABITS AMONG UNIVERSITY OF BENIN STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the causes and effects of poor reading habits among University of Benin students. The study is an empirical research as descriptive survey method was adopted. Four (4) research questions were raised: The population of this study consisted of 100 students of 50 students each drawn from English department and English and  Literature Education Unit of the Department of Educational Foundations respectively. The research instrument was validated by two lecturers of the Department of Educational foundations. Data collected from the survey was statistically analyzed. After analysis, results were displayed on tables showing frequencies and percentages of responses, including the decision made. Based on the findings, it was discovered that poor emphasis on the benefits derived from reading is a cause of poor reading habits; poor encouragement of students to read is a cause of poor reading habits; bad posture assumed while reading is a cause of poor reading habits among students; and reading to the hearing of students will help boost their interest in reading, and then, reading help the students go on the internet and interact with people you may never have met, which limit them to read effectively.
