ABSTRACT

The research on the topic "Examination of Noise Pollution on Effective Learning Amongst Full-time Undergraduate Students in University of Benin" was carried out by the researcher to ascertain the level of noise pollution on effective learning and strategies for minimizing noise pollution that would hinder learning amongst full-time undergraduate students in University of Benin. There is no doubt that noise has a detrimental effect on academic environment and learning behaviour of students and over the years, the academic environments of educational institutions have been characterized with noise pollution and this has posed a serious problem to learning process.

The literature review of this research work was derived my employing the use of current and past relevant documents related to the discourse of the variables of study. Thus, it was agreed by clearly sited scholarly support, views, opinions and contributions on the topic at hand that the level of Noise pollution, in the recent years, has been well recognized as one of the major trepidations that affect the quality of life and It is important to fight noise pollution not just for the nuisance caused, but also how it affects academic learning amongst students in the world.

The survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consist of 77,000 students of which 100 was used as the sample. This was drawn by using purposive sampling technique to select 5 faculties out of the 15 faculties in the University and a simple random sampling to select 20 students from each of the selected faculties. A self-structured questionnaire was administered after validation and reliability testing of the Instrument. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage was used to analyze the research questions

The findings of the study revealed that the level of noise pollution on effective learning among full time students in the University of Benin is high based on certain factors which include; inappropriate classroom layout, students' campaign in classroom, overcrowded classroom, poor classroom acoustics and notably classrooms that are located around noisy background. It can be concluded that the strategies for minimizing noise pollution that would hinder learning in the University of Benin are as follows; doing away with public address system in classroom areas, security men should be put in place to control the sales of things in classes, banning of hawkers in the classroom premises, removal of heavy machines around classroom environment, good policy put in place by the school management and minimizing the number of students per class.
