ABSTRACT
This research work examines the laws protecting children against sexual abuse in Nigeria. This is to examine the menace of sexual abuse of children in Nigeria. It further examines laws protecting children against sexual abuse under domestic and international laws, documents and reports. The research adopts the doctrinal method. This research, observes that legal framework of sexual violence in Nigeria contains many adequate provisions for the prevention and prosecution of sexual abuse in children. This shows the political will in Nigeria to tackle the menace. However, enforcement of these laws has proved to be a grave problem, the differences that also exist between sanctions for the same offence under various national laws. The study also finds that women are meant to submit to men and in turn, this gives men right over the bodies of women including a girl child, for which they can use as they like and not be held accountable. Also, the study further finds that ineffective enforcement of laws in Nigeria as regards this subject matter can be attributed to a number of factors, which include: inadequate post rape care services, poor police response, stigmatization, partial judiciary, cost of effective prosecution, to mention but a few. Based on the findings, the research recommends that government should recognize sexual abuse of children as a matter of urgency in Nigeria and treat it as such. Funds should be allocated for the treatment and follow-up of survivors, It therefore concludes that sexual abuse should not be tolerated in any form and must be punished. Failure to punish sexual abuse causes the victim to leave in constant fear and unrest.
