ABSTRACT

Pregnant women tend to face a lot of health related problems during pregnancy these include development of preeclampsia, abnormal labour or atonic bleeding, congenital anomalies, low birth weight stillbirth  and the roles of trace elements in the maintenance of well-being of fetus  are being overlooked in pregnancy. The levels of zinc, copper and selenium in pregnant women in first, second and third trimester were studied. One hundred and sixty subjects [40 Non-pregnant women, 40 pregnant women in first trimester, 40 pregnant women in second trimester, and 40 pregnant women in third trimester] were enrolled in the study. Serum zinc, copper and selenium were assayed using standard methods and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. There was increase in the trace elements levels as the pregnancy progresses to second trimester but decreases in third trimester. A significant increase was seen in test group C compared to control group A and also when compared to test group B. Test group D showed a significant decrease in Zinc compared to test group B and significant decrease in all the trace elements in test group D compared to test group C. The results obtained showed that It is important to check and boost the micronutrients level especially zinc, copper and selenium of pregnant women in order to avoid pregnancy wastage, premature babies and babies with congenital disorders.
