ABSTRACT

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory loss, cognitive decline, and behavioral changes. It is the most common form of dementia in the elderly population, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Antioxidants are molecules that neutralize ROS by donating electrons, thereby preventing oxidative damage and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Endogenous antioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, along with exogenous antioxidants from dietary sources (e.g., vitamins C and E, polyphenols), play a crucial role in protecting neurons from oxidative stress and mitigating the progression of AD.Bryophyllumpinnatum, commonly known as the "life plant" or "miracle leaf," is used in folk medicine for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, because of its potential therapeutic benefits in various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders like AD. The rats were divided into 3 groups; the control group, the Alzheimer’s group and the ameliorative group. Each group having (n=5) numbers of rats. The Alzheimer’s group and the ameliorative group were both administered calculated level of aluminium chloride to induce Alzheimer’s disease, after which they were treated with aqueous extractBryophyllumpinnatum. Result shows that there was a significant increase in Alzheimer’s disease group treated with Bryophllumpinnatum only compared with control in Superoxide dismutase (SOD) antioxidant. In conclusion, while Bryophyllumpinnatum holds promise as a potential therapeutic agent for Alzheimer's disease due to its antioxidant properties, further research is necessary to fully understand its effects on antioxidant levels in the context of this neurodegenerative condition.
