ABSTRACT

Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect of antidepressants such as paroxentine, and can negatively impact the quality of life of individuals who experience it. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Anthocleista djalonensis on sperm parameters in male rats with paroxentine-induced sexual dysfunction. The study investigated the potentials of Anthocleista djalonensis, a medicinal plant, to ameliorate the effect of paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction in male rates. The stem bark of Anthocleista djalonensis were dried and ground to powered form. 35 male wistar rats divided into five groups labeled A-E were used for this study, Group A was the control, group B was administered 100mg/kg of methanol, Group C was administered 200mg/kg. Group D was administered tadalafil while group E had no treatment. Sperm parameters which includes; sperm motility, sperm viability, sperm count were assessed using standard procedures. The results showed that the treatment with paroxetine significantly impaired sperm count, motility and viability, while treatment with Anthocleista djalonensis significantly improved these parameters. These findings suggest that Anthocleista djalonensis has a protective effect on sperm parameters in male rats with paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction. However tadalafil which is the standard drug proved to be very effective. From histopathological findings, the group left untreated had a marked level of damaged epididymis. The groups treated with the extract also showed that the epididymis were damaged; this may be due to the fact that the concentration and volume given were too much.
