ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of Universal Basic Education Programme in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. Four research questions were raised to guide the study.

This research adopted descriptive survey design. The population of this study consisted consist of the twelve (12) public junior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State with a total of two hundred and eighty three teachers and thirteen thousand six hundred and sixty five (13665) junior secondary school students. A sample of four (4) schools and 120 respondents was randomly selected for the study. The research instrument used to collect data for the study was a structured questionnaire, the validity of instrument was ascertained by the researcher’s supervisor.

The findings indicate that there is lack of available trained teachers, lack of school facilities, instructional materials and insufficient funds for the implementation of UBE in schools. Based on these findings, it was recommended that Government should pay more attention on teachers training institutions such as Colleges of Education and Faculties of Education in Universities in order to raise the standard and to produce quality and trained teachers for effective implementation of UBE programme.
