ABSTRACT

Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of Ascomycetes or Basidiomycetes fungi. They are consumed due to their nutritional or medicinal values. Ganoderma lucidum is a medicinal mushroom known for its therapeutical values especially in Asia. It is known as Lingzhi or Reishi in China and Japan. Pleurotus ostreatus is a mushroom also known for its nutritional and medicinal value. This study was carried out to evaluate the growth and fruiting body production of Ganoderma lucidum and pleurotus ostreatus amended with extract of Greenwayodendron suaveolens seed. Sawdust substrate was supplemented with powder of the seed of Greenwayodentron suaveolens at concentration levels of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8%. The bags were sterilized and inoculated with spawn of the test mushrooms. Mycelia colonization and fruiting were recorded. G. lucidum substrates colonized and produced fruiting bodies. 6% and 8% took an average of 40 days to fruit. The highest fresh weight recorded was 6%(153.33±6.7). Highest dry weight recorded was 6%(122.7 ±5.3) and biological efficiency was recorded. In Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation, there was no complete colonization of the bags. In the Vegetative growth study, the extract was prepared and different percentages were used 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and a control of only PDA. This study was done for both mushrooms, 18 petri dishes each and three replicates for each percentage. Vegetatively, Pleurotus ostreatus was the first to completely colonize the plates. 10%( 39.0 ± 1.7) was fully colonized and was denser than other replicates. In Ganoderma lucidum mycelia extension was also observed. 10% replicates were (61.70±3.10) after 14 days.
