ABSTRACT

Polyherbal extracts have a long history of traditional use in various cultures worldwide for their healing properties and have become a subject of interest in modern pharmacological research. The formulation has four medicinal plants that may contribute specific active compounds, and their combined action may produce more profound and diverse pharmacological effects than individual herbs alone. This study investigates the impact of the polyherbal formulation on the liver health of male Wistar rats. Graded doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg of the polyherbal extract and the controls were administered to Wistar rats to evaluate the liver function indices using the established procedure. The administration of the polyherbal extract showed different effects on the marker enzymes and other biochemical indices of the Liver but had no significant change in the organ-body weight ratio compared with the controls (negative and positive). The polyherbal extract did not significantly alter ALP, AST, ALT, total bilirubin, conjugated bilirubin, and globulin , but there was an increase in the level of total protein and albumin, indicating that there is a need for caution when using the polyherbal extract for oral remedies following its potential selective ability to alter specific biochemical parameters in male rats.
