ABSTRACT

I investigated the biochemical effects of the stem extract of Anthoclesta djalonensis on the kidney status of paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction in male wistar rats. A stock solution of Anthocleista djalonensis extract was prepared, Twenty five matured male wistar rats divided into five groups labelled A-E were used for this study, Group A was the positive control 10g so it wasn't given any treatment nor was it induced, Groups B-E were administered paroxetine

for seven days and after that, treatment began, Group B was given 100mg/kg of ethanol extract, group C given 200mg/kg of the ethanol plant extract, group D was given a standard drug, Tadalafil and group E was left untreated. Parametes like albumin, creatinine, chloride, urea, sodium, bi-carbonate, potassium, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Malonaldehyde (MDA), including the histology of the kidney of a rat from each group were investigated. Our results shows that the extract causes a significant increase (p<0,05) in creatinine, chloride, BCO. The group given 100mng/kg of the ethanol extract caused acute tubular necrosis on the kidney. This research has been able to provide further evidence to the sexual dysfunctional curative potentials of Anthocleista djalonensis and approve its use as a medicinal plant especially in rural communities where orthodox medicine is expensive or out of reach.
