ABSTRACT
Polyherbal extracts have been used in traditional medical practices over the years by various cultured for their medicinal properties and have become a subject of interest in modern pharmacological research. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of a polyherbal extract on the kidney function test in male Wistar rats assessed for aphrodisiac activity. Polyherbal extract doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg and the controls (distilled water-1.5ml and Sildenafil citrate-100 mg/kg) were administered to the Wistar rats to evaluate the kidney function indices using established procedure after their sexual behavioural study. Their blood was drawn from the tail or the saphenous vein, centrifuged, labelled appropriately and analyzed using a standard technique for assessing kidney function tests. The kidney weight ratios of the rats were removed and weighed using an electronic weighing balance to organ-body eight ratios of the rats. The polyherbal extract did not significantly (p 0.05) alter the urea, creatinine, chloride, potassium, sodium and bicarbonate concentration levels. The polyherbal extract did not significantly alter the kidney-body-weight ratio.
