ABSTRACT
Melastomastrum capitatum is a plant commonly found in Africa, it is consumed locally and reportedly used for diverse medicinal purposes. This study was carried out to assess the curative effects of methanol extract of Melastomastrum capitatum leaves in male Wistar albino rats that are anaemic, induced by phenyl hydrazine .A total of twenty-five (25) rats were used for this study. The rats were acclimatized for fourteen days and divided into 5 groups. At the end of the 14 days, phenylhydrazine was administered. Group 1 served as normal control group and groups 2 to 5 were the experimental groups. Two doses (100 and 250mg/Kg bw) of Melastomastrum capitatum leaf extract were administered. At the end of the experimental period, the rats were anaesthetized with chloroform, a blood sample was collected from the abdominal aorta and the heart and the rats were then sacrificed. Haematological analysis was performed on the blood samples as well as other biochemical analyses (Liver function tests and antioxidant assays). Results from this study showed that Melastomastrum capitatum leaf extract was able to reverse the anaemic condition induced by phenylhydrazine in comparison with Vitamin E, a known antioxidant, which served as the positive control.
