ABSTRACT

Antioxidants are the agents that can interfere with the oxidation process by various mechanisms such as, reacting with free radicals, chelating free catalytic metals, and acting as oxygen scavengers. The increasing demand for herbal drugs for the human application is causing a growing demand for the cultivation of Medicinal Plants. Cucumis sativus(Cucumber), family Cucurbitaceae is an important dietary plant used traditionally for medicinal purpose around the world. Accordingly, this study was designed to investigate possible changes in the cerebellum of adult Wistar rats following administration of aqueous Cucumis sativus extract. After purchase and acclimatization, the adult Wistar rats were weighed and divided into three equal groups (control and experimental groups). Group A (Control) was administered feed and water/day. Group B (CC1) was administered 250 mg/kg body weight (BW) of aqueous Cucumis sativus extract only. Group C (CC2) was administered 500 mg/kg BW/day of aqueous Cucumis sativus extract only. The administration, via an orogastric tube, lasted for 28 days. Animals were weighed before commencement and after the experiment. At the end of the experiment, neurobehavioral activity (open field test) was evaluated, recorded, and the rats were then sacrificed for sample collection. Results showed that there were no significant differences in the brain and body weights of rats treated with aqueous Cucumis sativus extract and control group. Comparison of neurobehavioral activity and antioxidant activity showed that although they were slight changes in rats treated with aqueous Cucumis sativus extract when compared to control there were no significant differences. In conclusion, the findings indicate that Cucumis sativus was not toxic to the rats and may be considered as safe.
