ABSTRACT
Azanza garckeana, is from the family “Malvaceae.” and also known as snot apple. It is a popular fruit tree commonly found in Nigeria, particularly Gombe state. Different parts of Azanza garckeana have been reported to possess certain medicinal values, which have been employed for the treatment of illnesses, these medicinal values are attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was carried out for the identification and quantification of various bioactive compounds present in the ethyl-acetate extract of the seeds of Azanza garckeana. From the GC-MS results obtained, a total of fifteen (15) compounds were detected. The compound hexadecanoic acid ethyl ester, was seen to be the most abundant compound, with a concentration (%) of 22.56%, and seen to possess anti-cancer properties, which can be useful in the prevention of cancer, while the compound ethyl 9- hexadecenoate was seen to be the least abundant compound with a concentration (%) of 0.55%, having no biological activity. This study reveals the presence of several bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic properties in the Azanza garckeana seeds.
