ABSTRACT

Erectile dysfunction is an underlying manifestation of cardiovascular disease, and its development often precedes clinical cardiovascular events. The increasing use of alternative medicine and herbal remedies for Erectile dysfunction with limited scientific investigations on extractions, efficacy, safety and dosage is a challenge to clinicians, whereas a comprehensive overview of clinically relevant research in these disciplines is currently lacking. Therefore, this research is aimed to systematically review and discuss the current evidence from placebo-controlled clinical trials that investigated the use of traditional medicine and herbal remedies in the management of Erectile dysfunction. Twenty (20) adult male and ten (10) adult female Wistar rats were used in this study. The male rats were randomly divided into five (5) groups of four (4) rats each. The three doses of the herbal preparation, 100mg, 200mg and 400mg administered had substantial influence on sexual parameters as compared to both the negative control, and positive control (reference controls). From the mounting, intromission and ejaculation frequencies, the herbal extract had a comparable effect on sexual arousal and better effect on improving sexual function in the rats. The levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low density lipoproteins were increased by all doses of the herbal preparation and the level of high density lipoproteins was decreased by all the doses when compared with the reference drug or positive control (Sildenafil). The results of this study when taken together demonstrated that the herbal preparation significantly enhanced the sexual behaviour parameters thus providing evidence for its use in ethno-medicine as an aphrodisiac agent.
