ABSTRACT

Sexual dysfunction, a common problem today is a common side effect of many antidepressant drugs one example being paroxetine; and this condition can have a negative effect on the individual experiencing it. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of ethanol extract of Anthocleista djalonensis in paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction in male wistar rats. This study investigated the ability of Anthocleista djalonensis, a medicinal plant, to alter and reverse the effect of paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction in the male rats used for the study. A stock solution of 10g/L of the plant extract was then prepared. Twenty five matured male wistar rats divided into five groups labelled A-E were used for this study. Group A was the positive control so it wasn’t given any treatment nor was it induced. Groups B-E were administered paroxetine for seven days and after that, treatment began. Group B was given 100mg/kg of ethanol extract, group C given 200mg/kg of the ethanol plant extract, group D was given a standard drug, Tadalafil and group E was left untreated. Treatment lasted for 21 days. Sperm parameters including sperm motility, sperm normality, sperm count were assessed using standard procedures. The results showed that treatment with paroxetine significantly impaired sperm count, motility, and normality while treated with Anthocleista djalonensis improved these parameters close to that of the positive control group. These findings suggest that Anthocleista djalonensis has a protective effect on sperm parameters in male wistar rats already induced with paroxetine which has a correlation with sexual dysfunction. However, the standard drug, Tadalafil proved to be more effective. This histological examination also showed that paroxetine had no damaging effect on the vas deference but had a damaging effect on the epididymis. The plant extract helped to correct these damages.
