ABSTRACT
Addressing privacy concerns and maintenance deficiencies in public sanitary facilities are crucial for ensuring satisfactory user experiences. This research assesses public sanitary facilities in Oshimili North and South Local Government Area of Delta state, focusing on adequacy, privacy levels, assessed their suitability for physically challenged individuals, analyzed utilization rates, examined their current condition, and evaluated their effect on public health. Additionally, deficiencies in existing facilities, community perceptions of cleanliness, and feedback on facility availability were investigated. The survey research design was used for the study. A total of 360 copies of a questionnaire and 72 copies of an appraisal form were administered in randomly selected public sanitary facilities. The findings reveal significant dissatisfaction among users regarding facility adequacy, emphasizing the need for urgent infrastructure improvements. Varying perceptions of privacy highlight accessibility and comfort as key concerns. Maintenance deficiencies across settings indicate challenges in ensuring overall facility condition. Recommendations include prioritizing infrastructure upgrades, implementing design modifications and maintenance protocols, establishing monitoring schedules, and intensifying community engagement for sustainable management. Overall, the research provides insights into existing infrastructure shortcomings and emphasizes targeted interventions to enhance the quality and usability of public sanitary facilities in the study area.
