EVALUATION OF PRODUCTION PROCESS AND CAPACITY UTILIZATION (UNIBEN WATER FACTORY AS A CASE STUDY)

ABSTRACT

When there is a tendency of people to consume more of a particular goods or products, it results to a need of an increase in the capacity of production of such products or goods as far as the aspects of human needs are concerned. In view of this, this research is set to examine the problems encountered when getting the raw materials, the problems of inventory management and policies, the problems encountered in the utilization of the installed capacity and the problems in the production process of UNIBEN water factory. This research aims at evaluating the production process and the extent to which the installed capacity is utilized, examining the sources of raw materials, management in UNIBEN Water Factory.

The researcher adopted a design approach known as Case Study Survey, which is found to be the most relevant and appropriate for the study. A case study is a research approach that is used to generate an in-depth, multi-faceted understanding of a complex issue in its real life context. Case Study Survey research is a research design in which a Survey is administered to a case, either a small sample or an entire population of individuals, to describe an aspect or characteristics of that population. In collecting data for the research, two sources of data collection were used. They are primary and secondary data sources. The primary data were gotten through personal interview and observations while the secondary data were collected from UNIBEN Water Factory and other relevant materials and information centers.

From the analysis of the results, 73.33% of the respondents agreed that time, cost and manpower are the major variables of the company, 75% of the respondents agreed that the company has annual report, 74.99% of the respondents agreed that the company is very competitive when compared to other companies, 65% respondents agreed that there is better management of materials and stock since the company was established which has lead to an increased speed in the management services, while 71.66% and 70% of the respondents said that raw materials procurement and distribution were centralized respectively. This shows that materials were procured and distributed effectively in their various departments, 74.99% of the respondents agreed that the cost of operation and administration has affected the general efficiency of the services rendered by the company. This shows that materialization in terms of capacity utilization has affected the level of services rendered by the company, 66.66% of the respondents agreed that Production planning takes place in UNIBEN Water Factory very well thereby improving productivity in the company, 66.66% of the respondents said that product production, storage, packaging are important steps in the production process, 75% of the respondents agreed that the product volume of the company versus market situation is high and 66.66% of the respondents said that receipt and inspection procedures are carried out by various departmental managers, line bosses and Factory managers, 73.4% of the respondents said that dwindling national economic stability, competition, consumer purchasing power are the major problems faced in the company, 65% of the respondents agreed that the company’s process planning and design takes place by the advice of its technical partners, 66% of the respondents agreed that the company’s level of products/service quality is high, 61.66% of the respondents agreed that the company manages their inventory while 61.66% of the respondents agreed that capacity utilization of production system has affected the services rendered. In conclusion, I found out that the installed capacity of UNIBEN Water Factory is utilized slightly above average, process planning and design takes place by the advice of its technical partners, product and services quality is high, and UNIBEN Water Factory copes with the management of its inventories, thereby achieving the objectives of this study.
