ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the Nigerian Institute of Public Relation’s (NIPR)code of  professional conduct among members in Benin city. The study is grounded in both the stakeholders and the social responsibility Theory and employed the use of a survey research design which is a primary mode of data collection, using questionnaire as the instrument of data collection while secondary data was obtained through previously published materials. A sample size of 55 active members of the NIPR Edo chapter was chosen using census method. This study revealed that a large percentage of active NIPR members in Benin are aware of the code of professional conduct and are in compliance with said code. It also identified several factors responsible for influencing their adherence to the code. Open ended questions was used in the questionnaire to ascertain some of the challenges faced in the professional practice of public relations and gave room for suggestions on how best to further improve awareness and adherence of the code of professional conduct. The researcher recommends that the Nigerian Institute of Public relations reposition itself to solve some of the challenges faced by practitioners and then address the question of professional ethics. There is also the need to harmonize training programs by making input, approval and supervision of training programs to ascertain their content, quality, scope and ensure high standard.
