ABSTRACT
Andrographis paniculata is a common medicinal plant located in Taiwan, Mainland China and India. It can be found in the tropical and subtropical regions of various Asian countries and can be used for the treatment of health conditions like common cold, cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases. This present study investigated the in-vitro antioxidant potential of the aqueous extract of the plant Andrographis paniculata. DPPH free radical scavenging assay, FRAP assay, TAC assay and hydroxyl radical scavenging assay were used for this investigation; with ascorbic acid as the standard. For DPPH, the IC50 of the standard was of a lower value in comparison to the aqueous extract indicating more antioxidant potential than that of the aqueous extract. For FRAP and TAC, the IC50 values of the extract was lesser than the standard; indicating a stronger antioxidant capacity. The results confirms that the plant A. paniculata possesses antioxidant potential that can potentiate the treatment of health disorders. Further studies can be done to improve the scientific findings of this experimental result.
