EVALUATION OF ICT-BASED INFORMATION RESOURCES AND SERVICE UTILIZATION IN JOHN HARRIS LIBRARY

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to valuate ICT based information resources and service utilization in John Harris library, University of Benin. Five research questions were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study. Random sampling technique was used to survey all the eight hundred and fifty seven (857) registered users of John Harris Library, University of Benin. 8% was taken out of the total population which was 107 and it was used as the sample population. The data were collected with a questionnaire instrument and analyzed using frequency and simple percentage. The result revealed that; John Harris Library have ICT-based resources like EBSCOHOST and E-Books, E-reference sources and OPAC, it showed that users rely on ICT-based resources for accessing E-journals and E-newspapers, sourcing materials for project writing, completing assignments and for others personal purposes, easy access to up-to-date information, enhanced research capabilities, support for learning, and userfriendly interfaces are the benefits user derived from the use of ICT-based resources in John Harris Library, the challenges associated with the use of ICT based information resources by library users include technical skills gaps, information retrieval skills, subscription issues, internet connectivity, power outages, and computer shortages and possible solution to the challenges are integrating information instruction into the curriculum, enhancing ICT infrastructure, improving internet connectivity speed, subsidizing access to digital resources, and ensuring uninterrupted power supply should be adopted.
